School of Worship - Spring 2010
Important Date January 12th, First day of Spring Semester Course Descriptions Our goal is to raise up a new generation of musicians and worshipers.
The following courses will help develop an individual’s ability to operate his/her skill in a church setting. Participation with other fellow musicians is KEY and will be implemented on a regular basis. Opportunities to sing with a live band, take part in live Productions and Church Services, Concerts and Outreaches may be offered when the student is able. “We will not only offer excellence in our gift, but excellence in our Worship!”Children / Youth Vocals: (Ages 8 – Jr. High only) This youth vocals class is for youth ages 8- Jr High who wish to develop their worship gift with other young folks their age, taught by Grace Elsner from the Youth Worship Team and the Noize Performance Team! Basic fundamentals of singing will be covered in this class, along with fun with friends your own age!
Vocals I: Basic Level Vocal Development (Ages 14 and up) This course will teach students how to vocalize in various styles of music in a Praise and Worship setting and equip them spiritually to operate effectively in their vocal gift for kingdom preparation and purpose. This fast-paced course will cover solo technique, group/background vocal technique, as well as biblical principles of music and song. This class is a great way to learn the basic fundamentals of singing, no matter what your experience is!
Vocals II: Intermediate Level Vocal Development This course will equip students to sing at an intermediate level in a Praise and Worship setting. Students will be taught vocal skills such as harmony, blending and techniques for vocal control in order to produce quality sound for a variety of music styles. This fast-paced course will cover solo technique, group/background vocal technique, as well as biblical principles of music and song.
Vocals III: Advanced Level Vocal Development This course is for the advanced vocalist in a Praise and Worship setting. Emphasis will be placed on using vocal ability to enhance and assist the move of the Holy Spirit in the live worship setting. Other skills introduced will be how to develop others in basis vocal training, as well as an introduction to worship leading. The intensity of this course will accelerate the student to the professional level while developing them spiritually to operate smoothly in their vocal gift with excellence and integrity. Ministry placement follows this course! Piano I: Piano Technique Fundamentals – 30 minute private lesson only This course will go over the fundamentals necessary for the beginner pianist. The basic skill and art of the piano, as well as the ability to sight read will be covered. Upon completion, students will also have acquired the knowledge to play and build triads, rhythms and scales with appropriate fingerings and proper hand positioning.
Piano II: Intermediate / Advanced Piano Technique – 30 minute private lesson only As a continuation of Piano I, this course goes into a deeper understanding of more diverse rhythms and styles of playing such as jazz and improvisation. Sight reading will also be studied more in-depth to develop a more confident and fluent pianist. This class is designed to enable the student to build a strong repertoire and to play professionally in any environment or genre.
Piano III: Advanced Piano Technique – 30 minute private lesson only As a continuation of Piano II, this course completes their training in diverse rhythms and styles, furthers improvisational skills, and readies them to play professionally in any environment or genre. Upon completion of this course, they will be ready for ministry placement!
Guitar I: Rhythm Guitar Techniques for the Beginner – 30 minute private lesson only This course will give students the knowledge and practice in playing the acoustic guitar in a solo or group setting. Emphasis will be on listening skills, sight reading, and fundamentals on how to play effectively.
Guitar II: Intermediate Rhythm Techniques and Lead Skills – 30 minute private lesson only This course will provide students the ability to master the art of rhythm guitar, as well as how to solo and play lead lines successfully. Through musical examples, this extensive course will equip the student on playing advanced chords, special picking techniques, and the tools necessary for ear training.
Guitar III: Advanced Rhythm Techniques and Lead Skills – 30 minute private lesson only This course will complete the journey of mastering the art of rhythm guitar playing, as well as how to play lead guitar lines professionally. This course also completes advanced chord playing development, special picking techniques and fine-tuning their ear training. Upon completion of this course, they will be ready for ministry placement! Bass Guitar I: Basic Bass Techniques for Laying a Solid Foundation – 30 minute private lesson or group class This course will prepare each student with the basic fundamentals of becoming a solid foundation for the entire band. Students will learn to listen to others in the band and be sensitive to the flow of the Holy Spirit. In our studies, we will listen to and learn various genres of Praise and Worship.
Bass Guitar II: Advanced Bass Techniques – 30 minute private lesson only In this course students will focus on more advanced music styles and rhythms. They will sharpen their ability on bass techniques, ear training, and finger picking. Leadership and soloist skills will also develop throughout the course.
Drums I: Beginner Drum Technique in a band/solo performance setting – 30 minute private lesson only This course will help enhance the student’s ability to find their voice within the instrument, allowing them to speak through the drums in a musical context rather than only in a rhythmic one. The rudiments of technique, application and practice will be developed along with coordination.
Drums II: Advanced Drum Set – 30 minute private lesson only In this course the student will learn to apply lessons learned in the first semester to multi-pedal orchestration. Various rhythms and syncopated time signatures will be studied, as well as soloing on drums, the history of drums and specifics of wood types, dimensions and drum heads.
Worship-Leading: (Upon audition / interview only) – taught by Grace Worship Staff This class is for the vocalist and/or instrumentalist that is called of the Lord to facilitate the worship experience in the corporate gathering. How to make song selections, understanding keys and theme flow, and how to navigate a team on the stage will be covered in this class. The intensity of this course will accelerate the student to the professional level while developing them spiritually to operate smoothly in their leadership gift with excellence and integrity.
